COFEE FLOWERS

FLOWER SHOW IN KERALA

KOCHI: Cochin Global Village – a combination of a consumer fair, aqua and flower show is on at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium.

A stage and other arenas nearby would host cultural and entertainment programmes, up to April 18.

The event has been presented jointly by the District Administration and the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and the stalls are housed in air-conditioned domes. A huge area has been set apart for imported flowers, mostly from Thailand.

Dry-flowers from the country are considered the best in the world. Wooden flower vases and amazingly-light ‘fruits' made of thermocol are among the other attractions.

At the flower show has been displayed a 25-foot dinosaur made from over 10,000 carnations and asparagus bunches.

A floral carpet made of exotic orchids, gerbera, alstromerias (rather rare in this part of the world), different varieties of chrysanthemums, carnations, roses and heliconia is another attraction.

The piranha – perhaps the most feared freshwater fish in the world, is among the exhibits at the aqua show. On weekdays the show would be open from 1 pm to 9 pm while on public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays it would be open from 11 am till 9 pm. Entry is through tickets.

VARIETY FLOWERS SHOW

Floral replicas of the Taj Mahal and the Egyptian pyramids attracted visitors to a flower show at Chennai.

Organizers claimed that a show like this enhances tourism in the city and spreads awareness about different types of flowers.

The main highlights of the flower show were floral replicas of Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, India Gate and the pyramids of Giza. They were all made of different types of flowers.
As Chennai is emerging as an international tourist destination, the main aim of show was to attract tourists from across the world.

“I have never seen such a colourful display of flowers anywhere. I have been to many places, but haven't seen such a massive display of flowers,” says a visitor.

Over 350 varieties of flowers, including imported blossoms were on display at the show. The show featured both indigenous and imported varieties of flowers such as roses, carnations, tulips, lilies and many more.

India is a small player in the 40 billion dollars global cut-flower industry, which is currently dominated by Holland, France, Italy, South Africa and Thailand. This show is seen as a platform for both horticulturists and prospective customers and gives India a chance to catch up with the international flower industry.
